Google One Gets New Upgrade Adds AI Credit System

Monthly subscribers now receive dedicated credits for Gemini AI features

Google has introduced a significant upgrade to its Google One subscription service, adding a new AI credit system that gives users access to premium generative AI features without requiring a separate Gemini Advanced subscription.

The change, rolling out globally over the coming week, replaces Google’s previous fragmented AI access model.

Under the new system, Google One subscribers at the Premium 2TB tier and above will receive monthly AI credits that can be used across Gemini Advanced, AI powered image generation, extended conversation lengths and document analysis within Google Workspace.

“We heard from users that managing multiple subscriptions was frustrating,” said Jane Park, Google’s product director for Google One, in a statement. “The AI credit system simplifies access while giving customers flexibility in how they use our most powerful models.”

Subscribers to the 2TB plan will receive 500 credits monthly, while 5TB and 10TB plans receive 1,200 and 2,500 credits respectively.

Each credit corresponds roughly to one advanced query or image generation. Basic AI features – such as email summarization and smart replies – remain unlimited and free for all Google One members.

Analysts view the move as Google’s attempt to boost AI adoption while defending its cloud storage business against competitors like Apple and Microsoft.

“Google is making a calculated bet that AI will become the primary retention driver for storage plans,” said Michael Chen, a tech industry analyst at Benchmark Partners. “The credit system creates a clear upgrade path without the friction of a second subscription.”

Existing Gemini Advanced standalone subscribers paying $20 monthly can migrate to equivalent Google One plans with no price change. The AI credits do not roll over month-to-month, encouraging regular usage.

The upgrade affects over 100 million Google One subscribers worldwide. Free Google account holders still receive limited access to Gemini 1.0 Flash without credits.
