google has launched a dedicated Gemini app for Windows, bringing its AI assistant directly to desktop computers. The new application is designed to let users access Gemini without repeatedly switching between applications, allowing them to get help while continuing to work on documents, presentations and other tasks.
The Windows app can be opened instantly using the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut. Users can bring Gemini over their active application to ask questions, check information, brainstorm ideas or get help with ongoing work before returning to their previous task.
Gemini comes to Windows desktops
Google said the new app provides a dedicated workspace for Gemini features that users already access through its services. The desktop experience also supports Gemini Spark, Google’s AI agent designed to handle multi-step tasks and assist users with digital work.
Users can also connect Gemini with Google applications such as Gmail and Google Drive. This can allow the assistant to use relevant information from connected services when helping with tasks such as preparing summaries or finding information.
Image and video creation included
The Windows app also brings Google’s growing collection of generative AI tools to the desktop. Users can create images with Nano Banana and generate videos using Gemini’s video-generation capabilities.
Google has increasingly integrated image and video creation into Gemini, alongside newer models designed for more advanced reasoning and agent-based workflows.
Designed to stay out of the way
Google said the Windows application is lightweight and designed to run quietly without significantly slowing down the computer. The company described the release as the beginning of a broader desktop experience, with additional native capabilities expected over time.
The launch follows Google’s wider push to make Gemini available across different computing environments. Google has also introduced a native Gemini application for macOS, giving Mac users a similar desktop-focused experience with a keyboard shortcut and screen-sharing capabilities.
The Gemini Windows app is available globally for computers running Windows 10 and Windows 11. Users can download the application from Google’s official Gemini desktop website. The launch gives Windows users a more direct way to access Google’s AI assistant while working, creating content and managing everyday tasks.
